Skype hits 100M subscriber mark

These are amazing numbers... Skype is great (and I don't use it much, hehe) ... but free peer-to-peer VoIP with a 100 million network sounds like a great deal to me.

Skype said Friday that it now has more than 100 million registered users of its free Internet-based calling service, nearly double the number of registered users it had in September 2005.

Skype, which is only two-and-a-half years old, is a peer-to-peer software service that lets people make phone calls from their PCs to other PCs anywhere in the world for free. The service works by turning voice signals into IP packets and sending them directly over the public Internet. Last year, Skype was bought by eBay in a deal valued between $2.5 billion and $4 billion. When the merger was announced in September, Skype had 54 million registered users.

I use Skype, it's fine for most things. I don't like my VoIP # not showing up right as caller ID, I really want that. Also, Skype doesn't save audio to MP3 like others have been doing for a while. There's a plugin, but most commercial.

I heard Yahoo now has VoIP in their app, ph# for $2.99/mo., like Skype's fee.

Well, Yahoo acquired Dialpad... man, I used dialpad about 7 years ago ... anyways, they've been talking about adding VoIP for their app since 2004... I can foresee Google doing so, altough google talk is not that popular yet, the XMPP protocol pays really well with SIP, and can do amazing things together...

What I ultimately want to see is VoIP over WiMax all over the US. The end of an era for cellphones. Small WiMax handheld devices capable of using any SIP server, and making wireless communications inexpensive for all of us.

You may say I'm dreaming, but give it a few years... you'll see.
