Vertica: new RDMS claims to be 100x faster
"Vertica describes its offering as a “grid-enabled, column-oriented relational database management system” that runs on industry standard hardware. It is designed to handle data warehousing, business intelligence, fraud detection and other applications, even in environments with hundreds of terabytes of data. The company says its technology can be used to execute queries 100 times faster than traditional row-oriented relational database management systems"
Vertica's product is in beta testing and the company is inviting those who want to be early adopters to give it a whirl. [full story]

There's no question that a “grid-enabled, column-oriented relational database management system” can, indeed, execute queries 100 times faster than a standard database. Sybase has been demonstrating this for some time with our <a href="http://www.sybase.com/products/datawarehousing/syb... IQ product. In fact, we have documented many customer stories showing a 1... improvement in query speed; some showing up to a 1... improvement; and one recent customer story showing a 1... improvement in query performance.
The entry of Vertica (and others) into this space only goes to show that the analytics server market is heating up. Providing, as we do, an established technology in this space to nearly a thousand customers, that's just fine by us.
