AIR News

Apollo is now called AIR... note, not Adobe AIR, just AIR .... AIR stands for Adobe Integrated Runtime, so you don't want to call it Adobe Adobe Integrated Runtime. You can get the beta from Adobe Labs.

Although I agree it would seem the logical name would simply be "AIR", I imagine a lot of us are in the habit of calling it "Adobe AIR" due to it being exactly written as such in numerous pages at the Adobe Labs website itself.

It also somehow gives it a better feel on the tongue to speak it compared to just AIR IMO :)

I actually spoke to Adobe about that and they said it may be attributed to a mass-replace from Apollo to AIR, making Adobe Apollo into Adobe AIR ... but they're aiming to brand the AIR acronym by itself.

It's funny how things get ingrained in us...even I am guilty of the act after seeing Adobe® AIR™ in so many references in the documentation and after today will do my level best to get out of the habit.

I imagine along with the fact Adobe writes it that way I originally justified it subconciously thinking to new users it would immediately make it obvious that AIR is an Adobe product but could just have easily written it as AIR with it's full description in parenthesis under it or next to it until AIR is more widely known by users outside the development community.

I appreciate your article reminding me of the obvious and will begin immediately changing my ways :)
