Mac Virtualization: VMware Fusion goes final

VMWare is the best virtualization software, period. I've been running VMWare workstation on my PC, ESX to host my servers, and Fusion Beta on my Mac .... Fusion goes final next week! Woohoo!

I'm curious to know what your opinion is on the difference between Fusion and Parallels? I don't have enough room left on my MacBook Pro's drive to install a comparable VM in Fusion, so my desktop virtualization experience is limited to Parallels (which has been great, IMHO,) but I do run VMware Server on an Ubuntu box, and have been quite impressed with it.

Ken,

I think the best thing about it is that with out doing any converting etc you can get your current virtual machines that are built in VMWAre Server / Workstation running on your mac. Also the unity thing (Run Windows Apps as if they where installed on the Mac) Is cool I think Parallels has it.

I've not used Parallels I just like it that I can create a VM on my Work PC copy it to my mac and away I go :) and vice aversa

Both Fusion and Parallels have unity, but I just like the VMWare software better... Parallels allows you to import VMWare images, but it's so much better to just use the same file system... you can store your images in an external drive, hook it up to your PC or Mac and just run them from there... Virtualization is great! Plus, with the ESX server, I can just upload my image to it and run it on the server.... it's just too cool.

I have not tried VMWare at all but have always used Parallels on my Laptop, my Wife's and my Daughter's iMac. It worked great, I installed one copy and then just copied that image over to their computers and activated with their proper serials. It is a great program in my own opinion. Also, on my laptop, since I was greedy and did not want to give any of my local drive space to windows, I installed my images on an external G-Drive (http://www.g-technology.com/ <-- They use CF for their site and make great external drive!). Actually, I have a copy of XP, Vista and Server 2003 for when I want to test something and not mess with my actual server (i.e. Sharepoint). It all works great and from an external drive. I even have an additional XP copy on a smaller portable drive (G-Mini) for when I am on the go.
